About Westside Grovely Football Club

Westside Grovely is a football club based in Keperra (Brisbane), with a storied history in the region.

Founded in 1964 As Budapest Grovely SC, the club fosters junior teams across many age groups, community Men’s and Women’s Metro teams, Men’s FQPL 5 Firsts and Under 23’s, and Masters competitions.

The club has seen significant progress in recent years, with the additional of many new teams across all age groups, and large-scale facility upgrades. All home games are played at Grovely Sports Ground, Keperra, and has two main fields available for club members, both of which include suitable lighting for training and matches.

Westside Grovely are proud of the community that has been built at the club, and are always actively looking for ways to support more teams and offer a welcoming environment for those who are new to the game, or looking to join a new club.

In the early years of Westside’s history, the senior men’s team played in Brisbane’s Division 2 (tier 2 of the Brisbane competition), however from the mid-1970s and 1980s the team dropped down the leagues, before becoming inactive after the 1988 season.

The club would only have junior representation until 2006, when a new men’s team was assembled by Michael Gooda, a life member of Westside Grovely. This team reentered the Football Brisbane pyramid in Metro 3 (then tier 7), and progressed up the Metro leagues whilst growing numbers and offering additional teams for senior players.

Westside finished second in the 2012 Brisbane Metro 1 season, the highest place of any non-Premier League team in the competition.

The club celebrated its 50th season in 2013, which saw the senior men’s team compete in a new league structure introduced by Football Brisbane, taking its place Capital League 3. Coached by Michael Gooda and Bill Faust, Westside finished in 2nd place, earning promotion. The 2013 season represents the clubs most successful campaign for the Men’s team in recent times, which was capped by a penalty shootout victory over New Farm United in the Grand Final.

In 2019, the club finished third in Capital League 2, narrowly missing out on promotion.

Further league structure changes in Queensland saw the club take its place in FQPL5, where the team continues to play today.

Junior programs have grown over recent years, with the Miniroos Kick Off Program (3-5 year olds), Miniroos (6-12 year olds) and Community Divisional teams (13 years and up) available to join for boys and girls.

Currently, the club have many members who have played with Westside Grovely for 20+ years, playing all the way from Juniors through to Seniors, and in some cases, Masters.

The Masters program offers a great way for those who are over 35 to continue playing the sport they love, in two separate age groups – over 35s and over 45s. Westside Grovely have Masters teams in both the men’s and women’s competitions, and welcome new additions as the club seeks to offer more opportunities across all age groups.

Miniroos Kick Off Program

Westside Grovely FC is committed to developing kids love and enjoyment for football by offering the 3-5 year program each year as an introduction to the sport.

Miniroos

All Under 6 to Under 12 players are called Miniroos. Games are played on a smaller field with fewer players per team than standard 11-aside football teams (i.e. 4v4 for U6/7s, 7v7 for U8/9s, 9v9 for U10-12s) and modified rules to promote inclusiveness, engagement and technical ability. Games in this competition are typically played on Saturday, either within a local hub or through Football Queensland coordinated matches.

The Season typically commences on the first weekend of School Term 2 (mid-late) April, with 18 games played running until the end of School Term 3 (early September). There is a 2-3 week break for June/July School holidays, but sometimes these weeks can be utilised as catch-up games if there are weeks of wash-outs.

There are no competitive tables or points scoring for any Miniroos teams – participation, development and enjoyment are the key goals.

All girl teams and competitions are available from U8’s through to U12’s dependant on numbers. Girls can still play in mixed teams if they prefer.

Juniors (U13s and over)

Metro Divisional football is an age group competition administered by Football Queensland for age levels U13 to U16 in an 11-a-side format. Westside Grovely FC fields teams from Division 1 to Division 5 depending on annual registration numbers.
